About Whicker Glass Company

For over 35 years, Whicker Glass has been serving the glass needs of the Bristol community.

The beginning of this small business dates back to the closing of Central Glass Company, which was located on the corner of Sycamore and Commonwealth Avenue in Bristol, Virginia. Charles Whicker operated Central Glass Company for many years, and when the company closed, he opened his own glass business and named it Whicker Glass. Charlie located his company on Newton Street in Bristol and ran the business from there until 1994. He sold his business to Stanley and Lucille Garland and they kept the name Whicker Gass, but moved the company to 815 Shelby Street where it is located today. The Garlands maintained the glass business for over 10 years. When it was time for their retirement, they simply closed the doors on Friday afternoon, hung a "for sale" sign in the window and went home. Stanley was facing some serious surgery at the time. Clark Oakley drove by the business for weeks, seeing the sign, and trying to decide if he wanted to leave the comforts of working for "the other guy" or set out on his own to run Whicker Glass. He chose the latter and the rest is history as they say. Clark and his crew run a very successfull business and add to their customer base daily.

Along with purchasing Whicker Glass from the Garlands, Clark was able to re-hire the original glass cutter, Eddie Russell. Eddie and his father had worked for Charlie Whicker at Central Glass Company for many years. Eddie went to work July 2, 1972 at Central Glass. He went on to work for Charlie when Charlie opened his own company. When Whicker Glass was sold to the Garlands, Eddie stayed to work for them. It has been a good relationship over the years as Eddie is the steady hand that guides us.
